From where we are now, I can't even remember the start.
Living at peace and singing songs was only the first part.
Who would have guessed that everything could change so fast?
Seeing the green grass, and hearing laughter is all but the past.

He is wise and he is old; he thought it would be best
if it was us that were to carry out this quest.
We set out quickly, leaving everything behind.
With you at my side, making sure I don't lose my mind.

Something so small-yet something so powerful.
You say it's taking a hold of me; that I should be careful.
I can see it in your eyes, you want it too.
But it is mine, my own; it will take over you.

I have to tell you, I gave up long ago.
There's no hope, no chance; there's not much more to go.
I am sorry though, I see what you saw. I see that you were right.
I realize that now after he tried to take it, which led to a fight.

I haven’t slept forever; nor can I remember the taste of food.
Starring at it all night, fingering it. It always angers my mood.
I can't get them off my mind. Where are they? Are they okay?
I don't even know if they're alive, but I know I'm dieing more each day.

We are such small simple creatures to carry out such a task.
These tears are real, and it's truly a burden so I shall wear no mask.
My feet are finally starting to feel the sting of pain.
But I mustn’t give up or it will have all be in vein.

We walk up our last climb, up to a place of doom.
How can this end happily; this will surely end with me in a tomb.
You're holding me, please don't let go, for I am naked in the dark.
It's trying to get to him. I'm deteriorated; it has clearly made its mark.

We're almost there but I think this is the end; how can this be?
I'm so tired and weak and I can't do this while his eye is on me.
We talk and reminisce about our home; the people, laughing, and the food I crave.
But in all of this I know; I would not have gotten this far without you, Samwise the Brave.

This is just a description of events leading up to the final step in one of the greatest tales ever told.

See yonder fire! It is the moon
Slow rising o'er the eastern hill.
It glimmers on the forest tips,
And thought the dewy foliage drips
In little rivulets of light
And makes the heart in love with night.
